Introduction
I disagree that cell phones are the most essential devices a student can own for the following three reasons
- Cell phones distract students from doing their work.
- Some students use cell phones for cyberbullying which hurt s their other fellow students; and
- Some students use cell phones to cheat in the exams.
Distraction
Cell phones distract students from doing their work. While in class, students use cellphones to play games which take away their focus on the class lessons. Students, also, use cell phones to text one another while in the class. Above all, students use cellphones to watch movies while in the class. Therefore, to avoid distractions and ensure absolute concentrations in their academic studies, students (particularly elementary and secondary school students) should not allowed to take their cell phones to classes.
Cyberbullying
Some students use cellphones for cyberbullying which can hurt other students. Basically, students cause harassment to other students by sending bad texts. Moreover, students say bad things to others by calling people names through texting. Lastly, they barrage other students with racial slurs. To prevent cyberbullying, cell phones are not considered an essential tool for students.
Cheating in Exams
Some students use cellphones to cheat in the exams. Students use cellphones to look up online for the answers to questions during the test or examinations. Likewise, students store notes in cellphones so that they can use them during exams. Finally, some students use their cellphones to record their notes with a voice recorder so that they can use them during the exam. Cell phone are not essential tools for students if cheating during exams would be reduced to barest minimum.
In conclusion, students should not actually own cellphones particularly in the school because:
- Generally, cellphones do not allow them to concentrate on their work during class time;
- Some students are not safe in school because some other bad students bully them online through cellphones.
- Cell phones make it easy for some students to cheat in the exam.
Though cell phone has a lot of benefits, it is capable of causing trouble for the user student or his/her friends when brought to school as it could be distractive, used for bullying or used for exam malpractice.
“Whenever I think I’m going to get into trouble, I hide my phone.”
